Subversive Cross Stitch: Election Night Schmelection Night

$50.00

Why keep your feelings wrapped up inside when you can craft and commiserate instead? This Election Night, we are coming together to work through our frustrations and hopes the best way we know how: through community and needlework.

Subversive cross stitch has a long history dating back centuries as a way for women to revolt against oppression and create alternative means of communication, all neatly wrapped up in “women’s work”. Famously, when Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in 1567, she began creating elaborate tapestries offering clues and instructions to her followers, as well as angry commentary against her captor, Queen Elizabeth I.

Local embroiderer Sarah Birgé will be on hand to help you design a customized piece of subversive cross stitch, whether it’s a cute emblem of a dumpster fire, a meaningful saying, or a piece of dark humor. We’ll have cross stitch alphabets on hand so you can create any saying you’d like. Whatever it takes to get you through this moment.

This two-part class begins with the basics of cross stitch, one of the most popular styles of the ancient art of hand embroidery. In the second class, we'll create personalized pieces ready to display. No prior experience or skills necessary.

Craft with friends! If you and your friends sign up, tell us your friends’ names and use the code CraftNight at checkout to each receive $5 off.

All materials costs are included in price.
