The Cartoon Shop: A Drawing and Computer Animation Class

Calling all future filmmakers and animators! This is your chance to work in a team to create your very own animated cartoon!

In this class, children will work together to dream up a cartoon episode. We will come up with characters and story. Then, depending on their interests, children can choose to become the film’s team of writers, drafting scenes and dialogue. Or, they can decide to become animators, drawing and painting backgrounds and characters. Children can also choose to work on computer animation and learn basic programming with Maria to make their characters and backgrounds move and come to life. Finally, students will give voice — literally! — to their characters and act out every scene. Some kids may decide to specialize in one part of the filmmaking process, or they might choose to float around and try out all the different roles. We’ll follow each child’s interest and support the kind of work they want to do.

As part of the class, children will get to learn from professional animators in the film and tv industry and learn what really goes in to their favorite movies and cartoons. At the end of the class, children will be able to download and share their very own animated cartoon!

This class will run for 11 weeks, with children working together to create one cartoon. Drop off is 3-3:30pm. We will provide a walking school bus from Union Elementary School.
